Summary

I enjoyed the story line about the twin sisters and the complicated issues involving race and family ties。 I’m not sure how I feel about the transgender story line—it’s something I don’t understand, but it felt oversimplified here。

Beautiful, but equally heart wrenching, The Vanishing Half offers up a raw, realistic portrayal of a pair twin sisters that part ways in life due to their upbringing that would shape their view of life and their surrounding。 One thing I loved is how the author did not linger too long on a character, always making sure each character, whether supporting or main, had their development and was not forgotten by the reader and introduced in a way that makes you care about the characters。 The pacing Beautiful, but equally heart wrenching, The Vanishing Half offers up a raw, realistic portrayal of a pair twin sisters that part ways in life due to their upbringing that would shape their view of life and their surrounding。 One thing I loved is how the author did not linger too long on a character, always making sure each character, whether supporting or main, had their development and was not forgotten by the reader and introduced in a way that makes you care about the characters。 The pacing in the book was excellent and their was no loose ends in the book, which is great for those like myself who absolutely hate cliff hangers。 5/5 perfect read。 。。。more

From the first pages, I was pulled into this novel。 I found several lessons and appreciated the author’s words giving a voice to issues likely to remain relevant in society。

Book club notes: 3。5 stars I'm still not sure how I feel about this book。 I wish the characters had a bit more depth to them。 Stella gave up everything yet I didn't really feel like I knew who she was。。。。I guess much like Kennedy felt。 Book club notes: 3。5 stars I'm still not sure how I feel about this book。 I wish the characters had a bit more depth to them。 Stella gave up everything yet I didn't really feel like I knew who she was。。。。I guess much like Kennedy felt。 。。。more

LOVED! Such a great story while touching on some harder topics but in a story format。 The character development was really good and the way the book flipped back and forth kept me interested!

This book was beautifully written, truly。 It just didn’t capture my attention and took me awhile to read。

This was a book about twins; about how they can be so different and yet forever connected。 It’s also a book about race: how one twin reacted to a violent racially motivated event in her childhood by embracing who she was as a black woman, and the other by running from it and pretending to be white。 Both woman struggled in their life, but the greatest struggle for both was losing their other half。 I found the parts of the book that talked about Judes life the most interesting。 At the end of the b This was a book about twins; about how they can be so different and yet forever connected。 It’s also a book about race: how one twin reacted to a violent racially motivated event in her childhood by embracing who she was as a black woman, and the other by running from it and pretending to be white。 Both woman struggled in their life, but the greatest struggle for both was losing their other half。 I found the parts of the book that talked about Judes life the most interesting。 At the end of the book I just felt like their story was unfinished。。。。 did they reunite? Did the cousins carry on with their relationship? Just when they found each other again, the book ended, leaving me wanting more。 。。。more

Thought the pacing was great, the characters mostly well-developed, and the balancing of multiple timelines (including future) felt really balanced。 Just in general, a great book! It really surpassed my expectations。

So I am going to go against the tide of all the rave reviews and say this book was good but not great。 (If I could, I would give it 3。5 stars) I won't pile on with plot points as they are thoroughly covered in other reviews。。。suffice it to say this could not be more of a book club book for suburban white women in their 40s。 It is all about the "fascinating" topic of "passing" (I had no idea! all the suburban white women in my book club exclaimed) and what a lonely place it is for those who pass。 So I am going to go against the tide of all the rave reviews and say this book was good but not great。 (If I could, I would give it 3。5 stars) I won't pile on with plot points as they are thoroughly covered in other reviews。。。suffice it to say this could not be more of a book club book for suburban white women in their 40s。 It is all about the "fascinating" topic of "passing" (I had no idea! all the suburban white women in my book club exclaimed) and what a lonely place it is for those who pass。 I pass as white even though I am not and, honestly, I don't even think about myself as one race or another。 Maybe the experience is different for others; I wouldn't know (and it certainly helps that I grew up in NYC in the 80s and not the South in the 50s)。 In any event, it's a great premise but that's not enough for me -- the writer has to take the novel to a more interesting place for the characters themselves, and this is where I think Bennett fell short。 At some point in the book, she basically just drops the twins where they ended up landing from the get go and then turns her attention to the kids。 The added twist of a transgender character did not work for me either。 It seemed as if Bennett felt the need to explore another aspect of identity and passing instead of keeping that aspect of the book simple and relying on her storytelling skills to take the twins' experiences to the next level。 While I found this book an easy read, extremely well written, and with good characters and a decent story line, it wasn't the blockbuster of the year for me either。 。。。more

Really liked this one。 One of my favorite relationships was btw Jude and Kennedy; I think their relationship acted as a subtle foil to the reader for the twins lack of one。 The coincidental meeting is a bit far-fetched, but I get the need for it to move the book ahead。 Interesting take on race, perception, and tough choices (family over future)。 I'm also a sucker for anything set in the deep south。 :) Really liked this one。 One of my favorite relationships was btw Jude and Kennedy; I think their relationship acted as a subtle foil to the reader for the twins lack of one。 The coincidental meeting is a bit far-fetched, but I get the need for it to move the book ahead。 Interesting take on race, perception, and tough choices (family over future)。 I'm also a sucker for anything set in the deep south。 :) 。。。more

I am not sure exactly where I stand in relation to this book。 I tend towards thrillers which I assumed this to be without reading any summaries prior to starting。 While I enjoyed the long stretch of time the book covered as well as some heavy realities, I did not feel it was a page turner。 Far more nuanced in the plot line。
